Summertime Fruit That Is Heart Healthy

When I think of summer, childhood memories are conjured up about being outdoors, swimming, and refreshing foods. Nothing is more refreshing than a chilled slice of watermelon. Our kids are building those same memories.

But here is some great news, watermelon is heart healthy. The big green fruit with the red flesh inside has long been known to be a natural diuretic and even lower blood pressure. The rind is loaded wtih the amino acid, L-citrulline, which is a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, leading to healthy blood vessels.

New study on cholesterol

Recent data also demonstrates watermelon extract improves cholesterol and LDL numbers, without the expense and side effects of statin drugs.

Even more exciting is that the most benefit was seen in people with MTHFR gene variants. These people have an increased risk of heart disease, among other issues. So get tested.

Protocol and results

43 subjects with dyslipidemia were divided into two groups. One group got 6 grams of watermelon extract, the other a straight sugar mixture. They were followed for 6 weeks.

The watermelon extract group dropped their LDL and total cholesterol, but only if they were carriers of the T allele in the MTHFR 677 gene. This allele is present in 50% of the population.

Skip the pharmaceuticals and go natural

Watermelon improves lipids, blood pressure, and is a natural pain reliever. That’s right. Watermelon contains nutrients that block the COX-2 enzyme, therefore lowering inflammation. Who needs Celebrex or Motrin?

The study dose was 6 grams of watermelon extract. This is equivalent to 2 pounds of whole watermelon. You decide what is right for you.

Talk with your healthcare provider to see if going natural is an approach for you. Even better, find a holistic doctor.
